Mindfulness, Meditation, and Yoga
I am a huge fan of connecting the Body and the Mind. The world we live in is filled with text messages, constant noise, and can be overwhelmingly fast-paced. Sometimes slowing things down, creating a calm environment, and actually feeling alive is all you need towards improving your quality of life. Mindfulness, Yoga and Meditation should be part of every Health and Physical Education curriculum and school because of the overwhelming research that has shown how amazing it is on your body and mind, especially when you connect it to student learning and success. They are phenomenal ways to also introduce fitness components such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength/endurance, and flexibility at the same time. So, stop what you are doing, take a deep breath, and just feel yourself alive!
Your Mind is a Powerful thing
I am a huge believer in the notion of you are what you believe. I heard something on the radio while I was driving about a study involving a brain scan and when I got home I immediately searched the internet to read about it in it's entirety. Click the brain to read the study for yourself!
The premise of the study being that people who feel younger than they actually are, have healthier brains. The researchers correlated it to physical and mental activity playing a critical role in overall brain health.
Bottom line....Age is only a number and we all need more play!

"Super Agers"
A "Super Ager" is someone whose brain ages twice as slowly. They are basically losing their brain volume much slower than someone who is the same age.
Even though there is no set way to preserve brain power, research has shown that certain lifestyle traits have contributed towards stronger overall brain function and health such as:
1. Regular physical exercise that involves strength training
2. A healthy and balanced diet
3. Working the brain with challenge, puzzles, memory activities, and tasks.
4. An involved and active social enviorment
Go for a walk/run with a friend as you count and memorize your path, grab a healthy lunch, and have a deep and meaningful conversation and you are on your way to a stronger brain!
